The Communal Bank “3 de Mayo” [May 3rd] meets every fifteen days in the canton of Jipijapa, a canton known as “La Sultana del Café” because of its extensive fields of incomparably flavored coffee, its cuisine, and for the warmth of its people. This is where we meet Juana who is 49 years old and married. She has nine children of which seven are grown. Her two younger children are 15 and 9 and are studying in secondary and primary school, respectively. Four of her children still live with her. Her husband works occasionally. She has a general store in her house where she sells all types of basic staple products. And at the start of the school term she also sells schools supplies. She works every day from 6am until 8pm and sometimes even later. Her husband helps her with the business when he isn’t busy. She tells us that although her business is only 4 years old, she has very good customers that buy from her on a daily basis which is due to the good service that they offer. She will use this loan to buy school supplies and make the most of this time when school supplies are what sells best.
